Rainy day quilting

 

 

Here are a few photos of the 16 patch that I am quilting.  The rain is pouring down so what a better way to spend a July day than quilting.

 

April Quilts

 

This is a St. Louis 16 Patch.  The strips were 4" wide.  I just sewed the squares together today.  Now I need to sew fabrics together to form a back. No border is planned since it is big enough around 52 x 71.

 

The colors on the photos show a dark yellow color, actually it is a very soft off white color.  Two quilts made with all of the blocks that I had sewn up.  The first one I made I did not want a border on it.  I pieced the back with the flower strip.  Then since I had left over blocks I made the second quilt.  Since I did want it to be a bit bigger I planned on putting a border on it.  I went to Rosie's and found some beige fabric with the flowers on it which I planned on using for the back.  When I got home I liked it as the border fabric so adjusted my plans.  The thin yellow border is actually the back side of a bright yellow print.  It works perfectly using the wrong side.  I quilted both of these very heavily so when they are washed they crinkle up and feel like old quilts.

B is for...

Black baby quilt.  It is in the works.  I will probably have the top finished tonight then the decision about the back and how to quilt it.  I know that a trip to the quilt store is needed to purchase some quilting thread that will match.

Scrappy Bargello Again

 

 

 

 

The first time I made Bonnie Hunter's Scrappy Bargello I thought to myself  this is too much sewing- I'll never make another.  The second time I made one I thought- this is a lot of sewing-- can't wait until I make another.  So this one is the fourth that I have made. 

 

If you have read the Quiltville blog or have seen Bonnie Hunter in person you know that she loves recycled men's shirts.  So, in homage to Bonnie I got some shirts from DH's closet as well as the thrift stores and some from a friend and started cutting.  My plan at first was to do the diagonal squares with the stripes but I was unable to get the stripes to match up so instead made the O blocks. 

 

 

For some reason the photos have made the fabrics look very odd.  Must be a strange setting on the camera. 

Anyway, while I was cutting out the fabrics for the O squares I also cut strips to make another Scrappy Bargello.  I am on the third panel right now but wouldn't you know it- I sewed it in the wrong order so I need to rip out the seam.  Here is a pic of the first two panels.

I still have a lot of shirt fabric left so I think I am going to be sewing a few more quilts out of it. 

 

As an aside.  I really am loving my new 97d foot on my machine.

 

End of 2014

 

Here are two photos of the finished wool quilt- I quilted.  Since I had trouble quilting straight lines in the quilt due to using wool batting I resorted to quilting rocks.  I kept thinking about rocks in my brain. This quilt took a long time to sew since there are so many tiny pieces.

Here is the current work in progress. Monkey wrench blocks.  So far I have 40 finished and maybe another 60 in the works.  I have no idea yet what I am going to do with them or how big of a quilt I want- or if it is going to be two quilts. I don't even know if I am keeping this one or donating it away...It is fun to sew these.  The cutting of each individual piece took quite a long time since it is all scraps. 

Here is the Scrappy Trips Around the World I made for a young teen just diagnosed with cancer.

I made a bunch of Parker's Corner blocks - enough for two quilts as well as the backing on one of them.

I still need to quilt these but the binding is sewn on already for both.

Here is what I was able to sew together on Thanksgiving.  I made the crumb blocks this summer and had them waiting to be laid out.  I wanted to do something fun for the layout so I had a bunch of math to work out to get it all together.  I will have a red border and red binding around the edges.
